Electricity: Throwing Light On The State Government’s Intervention

After a successful town hall meetings of Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN on the restoration of electricity to Ondo South held at Williams Place, Igbokoda and Idepe Town Hall, Okitipupa respectively with the people of Ese Odo, Ilaje, Irele and Okitipupa Local Government Areas on Tuesday, 11th September, 2018, where the people expressed their displeasure over the perpetual darkness in the Southern District and Governments gave assurance to restore electricity.

It has become imperative to elucidate more on the Ondo State Government’s intervention through the office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Utilities, Engr Tunji Light Ariyomo. The approach of Governor Akeredolu- led administration to solving and finding an ensuring solution to the age long darkness in Ondo South is multilevel.

First, is to work hand in hand with the Federal Government to rehabilitate all electric installations in the region. This is yielding tremendous results. Electric polls and all materials required have been mobilised to various sites.

More importantly, the State Government’s intervention, Mini-Grids and Independent Power Projects, which some people are mistaken for solar street lights have taken off. The stand alone solar panels are designed to power individual houses.

Governor Akeredolu has awarded contracts for Mini Grids in some selected communities – this was why he visited Aboto in Ilaje Local Government Area and Igbobini in Ese- Odo, where more than 80% work has been done. Individual houses are now powered in the benefiting communities by Solar Energy.

Not only that, the projects being supervised by the state’s Office of Public Utilities, would cover communities such as Igbokoda, Obenla, Kiribo, Igbotu, Iyansan near Irele, Iju Odo, Bamikemo, and Lipanu.

This projects have started long. You would recall that the power intervention programme underwent mandatory competitive bidding process in order to select the best partners, costs and tariff plans for the state.

This explanation becomes necessary because I have read comments of people on the various New Media platforms, mixing up what the State Government is doing with street lights. This is a capital NO! Governor Akeredolu is building alternative power supply -essentially Solar.

While addressing participants at the Okitipupa town hall meeting on Tuesday, Governor Akeredolu explained that there were many communities in the State that are not yet connected to the National Grid which the State Government is determined to power through Solar Energy.

Essentially, the commitment of the present Government is to restore electricity to towns and communities connected to the National Grid. Also, government is building alternative power supply – mini grids and solar panels to power houses in communities and villages on islands that have not yet been connected to the National Grid.

Soon, the Ondo South will not only be reconnected to the National Grid for regular power supply it will have Solar Power Supply as backup. The fact that the South is the industrial base of the State can not be overemphasized !
